I am so excited to be starting my blogging journey... again after many attempt! This is my first blog of many to come and I felt what better subject to discuss then New Year's Resolutions.
I think we all have things about ourselves that we would like to change, and what better time to change them then the new year? I used to be totally on board with this. I bought into the idea of having a resolution and mine always had to do with my health and weight loss. Have you seen that meme where on December 31st there is no one at the gym, January 1st it's packed, and January 2nd there is no one there? I have attached it to this blog for comical purposes! Anyway, this meme is the reality of resolutions. We let some of our biggest insecurities, or issues we have with our lives deteriorate, and then we decide on this one day we are going to eat our black eyed peas, make resolutions, and buy our gym memberships (that's how they suck us in, commit us to a year contract, that they know the majority of people will only go for a month or so). New Year's Resolutions, are something that becomes commercialized like so many other things. Through the years I have to realize that a resolution can't happen just because it is a new year. It should be happening long before the new year, it should be happening because we want it for the right reason, not because it feels like we have to do it. I find inspiration in quotes, and when I am questioning something it especially helps whatever it is that I am struggling with. I found a quote that talks about making changes and being the best you can be in the next 24 hours. That resonated with me more then anything related to goals, and resolutions ever has. What a perfect concept, to focus on being the best we can be and accomplishing our goals, and giving ourselves the next 24 hours to make it happen. How can we set ourselves up for failure if we are allowing ourselves a day at a time? Some days may not go perfectly, we may struggle, we may feel like we have failed. But it's ok. Yes you heard me right. It is ok. It is ok to have a cheat meal, its ok to get angry about something, to over analyze something, to yell profanities in the pick up line at your child's school. We are not perfect, and we are going to have days that just aren't our day. But those days don't mean we failed, they just mean we had an off day. So instead of having resolutions, lets do the best we can in the next 24 hours. Let's think about the things we would like to change and improve, and work our hardest to make those happen. If there is a day that is not so great, then we can try again the next.
